Kids in the Kitchen

Kids in the Kitchen is a free event put on by the Junior League of San Diego at Olivewood Gardens.

Kids in the Kitchen is an initiative supported by the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. that addresses the growing health problem facing today’s children and empowers youth to make healthy lifestyle choices to help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues.

For this event they asked Flour Children to be the guest chef, and of course I said yes! I’m always excited about any event at Olivewood! It is truly an incredible place.

My station was a make your own pasta salad station- the kids prepped tons of seasonal vegetables, including carrots, kale, peas in their pod (the favorite!), broccoli, cauliflower, and lots of fresh herbs. After the veggies were prepped, the kids got to create their own pasta salad, adding cheeses and nuts to their pasta and vegetables. When I saw they had three vegetables on their plate, and could name all three of them, they were allowed some dressing. A balsamic vinaigrette that everyone just loved!

The kids were allowed to get so creative while encouraging each other to try new things. It makes me smile so big when I see the kids explaining to each other what kale is, for instance, and how she or he loves to cook with it at home! Peer pressure at its finest.

I cannot wait for the event on March 2, where Flour Children will be there again- this time creating our own granola yogurt parfaits!
